Have you ever wanted to tell your snoring spouse to put a sock in it? The actual solution to a snoring problem isn’t too far off, according to sleep expert. Wearing compression socks, sometimes called flight socks, to bed could be one solution to keeping your snoring at bay. “While this might be a different type of sock to your regular trainer socks, wearing flight socks during the day — to be swapped with a pair of cotton socks (or another breathable material) at night — can lead to a more restful night,” Martin Seeley, CEO and sleep expert at MattressNextDay told the Sun.“A university found that flight or medical socks, worn during the day, prevent the build-up of fluid – that travels up the body when the person is lying down and can cause snoring,” Seeley continued. Seeley is referencing a 2015 study from the University of Toronto.“The study found that some of this fluid ‘shifts’ up to the neck area as a result of gravity and this, combined with congestion as a result of hay fever, can cause major snoring in sleep,” Seeley explained. “The study found that disruptions in sleep were cut in half among those who wore these socks,” Seeley said.Seeley said another way to avoid snoring is to skip a glass of wine before bed. “Alcohol relaxes the muscles in the throat, which removes the rigidity around the airways,” he said.“That sets off the vibrations in the soft tissue once again,” he added. Seeley also recommended people sleep on their sides instead of their back and opt for pillows that are hypoallergenic. “Hypoallergenic pillows will cut down on the number of fine particles around your nose and mouth,” he said. Earlier this year, Seeley recommended people do a 30-second exercise before bed to keep snoring at bay. He advised snorers to close their mouths and move their tongues in one direction 10 times, another direction 10 times, and then a third direction 10 times. He said snorers could expect better s...
