Charlie Woods fails in first attempt to qualify for U.S. Open

Charlie Woods didn’t advance in his first attempt to make the U.S.Open. Woods, the 15-year-old son of golf star Tiger Woods, shot a 9-over 81 on Thursday at the Legacy Golf & Tennis Club in Port St.

Lucie, Florida.The event was a local qualifier for the U.S.Open, in which Woods finished 61st in a field of 71 as he shot a 40 on the front nine and a 41 on the back nine. The top five players advance out of the local events to one of 13 36-hole qualifying events in June ahead of the U.S.

Open, which begins June 13.Woods finished 12 shots behind medalist Michael Buttacavoli.The U.S.

Open will take place in June at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club No.2 in North Carolina and, according to The United States Golf Association, Woods was one of 10,084 entries attempting to fill 80 open spots in the event. It was Woods’ second attempt at qualifying for a PGA-level event after he failed to qualify for the Cognizant Classic in February. Woods shot an 86 during the pre-qualifying round at Lost Lake Golf Club in Hobe Sound.He still has plenty of time to be in a major before Tiger, who appeared in his first Masters at the age of 19 in 1995. Since Tiger did that, he has won 15 majors, including the U.S.

Open three times in 2000, 2002 and 2008. Woods has had a busy past several months. He helped his high school team – The Benjamin School – win a Florida high school state golf championship in November, and Woods played alongside his father in the 36-hole PNC Championship, something that he has done for four consecutive years. ...
