Pirates manager Derek Shelton was in postgame shock after fan falls from stands

Joy quickly turned into shock and concern throughout the Pirates’ dugout.While celebrating Andrew McCutchen’s two-run double that gave the Pirates the lead for good in a 4-3 win over the Cubs on Wednesday, Pittsburgh’s players noticed a horrific scene in right field.O’Neil Cruz pointed toward that direction, before others started doing the same.A fan had fallen from the right field bleachers — situated 21 feet in the air — in a horrifying scene at PNC Park and was in critical condition as of 10:30 p.m.ET Wednesday, according to Pittsburgh Public Safety.The man, who is in his 20s, suffered a skull fracture, according to KDKA in Pittsburgh.“Even though its 350 feet away or whatever it is, the fact of how it went down and then laying motionless while a play’s going on, (Cubs manager) Craig (Counsell) saw it, I saw it, we both got out there, I think the umpires saw it unfortunately because of the way the ball kicked,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said after the game.
“It’s extremely unfortunate.That’s an understatement.”Shelton spoke on behalf of the organization Wednesday night since the team closed its clubhouse following the harrowing scene, according to MLB.com.The sixth-year manager reportedly only discussed the concern regarding the fan during a brief postgame press conference with reporters.“I want to offer thoughts and prayers with the incident that happened earlier in the game,” Shelton said after the Pirates improved to 12-19.
