In a city where a private outdoor hangout can feel as rare as a rent-controlled apartment, one Manhattan couple built a sky-high oasis — and now, they’re ready for a new owner to make a splash.A penthouse in the Flatiron District with a rare private rooftop pool, and even a hot tub, has returned to market asking $35 million, The Post has learned. The triplex residence, perched atop 55 W.17th St., belongs to hedge-fund manager Teddy Kang and his wife, Elise Kang, who purchased and customized the space before the building was completed.The Kangs bought the unit for $16.76 million in 2017 and worked closely with developer Toll Brothers City Living to combine two and a half floors into a sprawling six-bedroom, 5.5 bathroom penthouse, while retaining part of the third floor as a separate rental.That portion is not included in the sale. Among the custom features: a rare rooftop pool extended to more than 20 feet in length.The al-fresco space also boasts an outdoor kitchen and room for dining.
A pergola shelters the outdoor dining area.“I’ve always thought that the city is a very hectic place,” Kang told the Wall Street Journal in 2022, when the property first hit the market.“There’s a lack of outdoor space where you can just go home, relax and soak in the sun or do outdoor activities.”The Kangs had explored options on the Upper East Side but struggled to find a developer open to creating the kind of outdoor living space they envisioned. Flatiron, by contrast, offered the flexibility they needed to bring their vision to life.
The building presented a “unique opportunity,” Kang said.Access across the three levels is via a dramatic spiral staircase finished in Venetian plaster and modeled after one at the Edition Hotel near Madison Square Park.
