Long Island widower, 75, busted after 2 dozen dead cats found frozen in putrid house of horrors

An elderly Long Island widower was hit with a series of animal cruelty charges Tuesday after nearly 100 cats — dead and alive — were found inside his feces-filled house over the weekend, authorities said.Suffolk County resident Stephen Glantz, 75, was arrested by the county’s Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for allegedly keeping the hordes of pets in horrific conditions.First responders pulled 28 dead cats from the Westminster Drive home in Bohemia Saturday afternoon.Another 69 felines were found alive, including eight kittens, but veterinarians were forced to put three adult cats down afterward, SPCA chief Roy Gross told The Post.“About two dozen cats were in the freezer,” he said in an interview.“Floors covered in feces, soaked in urine, the floors were actually spongy.
The smell from urine was very overwhelming to say the least. One of the investigators ran out vomiting from the smell.” The probe jump-started last week when the SPCA received reports of possible animal abuse in the home, where Glantz and his late wife lived for 30 years. The house is no longer inhabitable, Gross said.
The cats were attracted to the dingy property for years because Glantz and his spouse put out food for the scores of felines who eventually found their way inside, neighbors previously said. But his wife died a few weeks ago, which meant Glantz was stuck with the swarm of cats alone. He’s facing nine counts of animal cruelty to animals and nine counts of failure to provide proper food and drink to impounded animals, Gross said. Each count is a misdemeanor and could carry up to a year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine, though it’s unlikely he’ll face a stiff sentence if convicted on all charges. Glantz would be placed on a registry that prevents him from owning a pet for five years if convicted, Gross said.
The cats have all been transferred to the Islip Animal Shelter for ongoing care.On Sunday before his arrest, Glantz declined to comment about the h...
