US honors Johnny Gaudreau after first world championship title in 92 years

With the celebration on, Team USA remembered Johnny Gaudreau.The United States topped Switzerland in the world championship Sunday in a 1-0 overtime victory off a goal by Sabres forward Tage Thompson to capture the tournament title.It’s the first time the US has won the tournament in 92 years.Thompson’s game-winning goal came two minutes into the overtime period when he put a shot past the blocker of Leonardo Genoni. Logan Cooley and Brady Skjei were credited with the assists on the game-winning goal. Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman stopped 25 shots in the win over Switzerland. “We did it, the wait is over,” Swayman said in a post by USA Hockey.“Thanks for sticking along with us.
It’s going to be a great summer.”After the victory, the Americans honored the late Gaudreau, who died in a bicycle accident that also killed his brother, Matthew, last year. Clayton Keller, Zach Werenski, Conor Garland, Thompson and Skjei skated over to accept the tournament trophy and draped a No.13 Gaudreau jersey over it before taking it back to their teammates. Gaudreau had been a big part of USA Hockey, helping the United States win gold at the IIHF World Junior Championship and bronze at the Worlds.
