Anthony Richardson visits famed surgeon as Colts face injury worry

Time might heal all in the case of Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson.Richardson, who was shut down on May 29 over an AC joint issue in his throwing shoulder, flew to Los Angeles on Tuesday for a second opinion to meet with renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr.Neal ElAttrache, who said to rest and see how he’d feel. Richardson is familiar with ElAttrache, who is the same doctor who performed surgery on Richardson’s right shoulder in October 2023.  Colts head coach Shane Steichen said Tuesday that the prognosis was no different from what the team doctors had previously reported and that it’s still unclear when he might return.“Status quo.” Steichen told reporters.

“It’s the same thing.We’re rehabbing him, and no timetable for his return.” Richardson, 23, is coming into his third NFL season after playing just 15 games in his first two years, which were marred by injury and inconsistency.The 2023 first-round pick’s first season was cut short by a grade-2 sprain in his shoulder, forcing him to miss 12 games. When he returned in 2024, Richardson struggled and was ultimately benched for veteran quarterback Joe Flacco in Week 9.

He was later reinstated to the starting role just two games later in Week 11 against the Jets, and he finished the year with 1,814 passing yards (on a 47.7 percent completion rate), eight touchdowns and 12 interceptionsAnd this upcoming third season, Richardson is not guaranteed to be the starter, as the Colts signed former Giants quarterback Daniel Jones to provide competition for the job.“[Jones has] been great,” Steichen said this week.

“He’s done a really nice job for us, obviously, acclimating to the offense, learning … the system.“Obviously, a smart guy, understands it.

He’s picked it up real nice, and he’s done some good things so far.”...
