Pete Alonso reveals what has to happen for him to retire with Mets

It’s really rare for a guy to spend his whole career with one team — I mean, I’ve thought about it, for sure,” Alonso said.“But the business side of things has to work out for that.

I hope that the business side works out to be that way.“I hope that the business side works out to where I don’t have to do that [leave].”A protracted free agency kept Alonso’s Mets future in limbo this past offseason.But he eventually signed a two-year, $54 million contract — with an opt-out after 2024 — shortly before spring training to remain in Queens.So far, it has paid dividends for both Alonso and the Mets, as he’s in the midst of a career year.Through 70 games, Alonso has a .298/.397/.584 slash line — which would all mark career-bests — with 17 home runs and an MLB-leading 22 doubles and 63 RBIs.His 179 OPS+ also leads all National League hitters.It comes one year after Alonso’s rocky contract season, in which he posted a career-low .788 OPS in the regular season before hitting one of the most iconic home runs in franchise history in the ninth inning of the win-or-go-home game of the wild-card series against the Brewers.
