LIRR train crashes into vehicle in fiery wreck, injuring 3

A Long Island Rail Road train smashed into a car at a railroad crossing on Monday evening — igniting a fiery wreck and injuring three passengers, according to authorities.The Ronkonkoma-bound passenger train from Jamaica was traveling east when it struck a vehicle at the Little East Neck Road crossing east of the Pinelawn station at around 7:15 p.m., according to the MTA Police.Three adult passengers on the train reported injuries.One was treated at the scene, and two other passengers were taken to Good Samaritan University Hospital, police said.
No members of the train crew or occupants of the vehicle were injured.It’s not immediately clear when, or if, someone had abandoned the car at the tracks.Roughly 40 passengers aboard the LIRR train were evacuated and provided bus service to complete their rush-hour journey home, authorities added.Photos of the aftermath of the collision showed firefighters hosing down large orange flames at the front of the train, which appeared charred alongside the completely totaled and burnt shell of the vehicle.
Ronkonkoma branch service remains suspended as authorities assess the damage and repair to tracks at the scene of the fiery crash.The MTA has urged customers to check the TrainTime app or head to mta.info for updated information about their morning commute.
