Kirk Cousins narrowing options in second week of NFL free agency

Kirk Cousins’ free agency has entered the “And behind Door 1…” phase.The veteran quarterback is reportedly considering three different options after going unsigned in the first week of free agency, according to Sports Illustrated.The Falcons released Cousins last week with a post-June 1 designation, and they are on the hook for the $10 million guarantee he received for the 2026 season.The first option, and the one that seems to be the most unlikely, is that Cousins lands a starting gig.Sports Illustrated listed the Raiders and Steelers as potential options, although both of those jobs may not be open for long — if at all .The Raiders could have a need if they allow expected No.1 pick Fernando Mendoza to develop at the start of the season, but it’s always possible he starts Week 1.The Steelers gig is open but would close fast if Aaron Rodgers returns.The second door is that Cousins pursues a backup role with a playoff-caliber team since it would, in theory, set him up for the best success should he play.The Rams are one possibility since it’s uncertain if Jimmy Garoppolo will return, while the Chiefs just acquired Justin Fields to fill that role.The third possibility is to just wait to see if a better situation arises.Teams always deal with injuries during training camp, and there are always setbacks once the season opens that create needs.Rather than rush to sign now, Cousins could see if there is a situation to his liking down the road.Cousins, 37, started eight games for the Falcons this past season and appeared in 10, throwing 10 touchdowns to five interceptions and posting a 5-3 record.The downside to potentially waiting is there are other similar veteran quarterbacks who are also searching for jobs and they could scoop up some of these roles.Russell Wilson, Garoppolo, Joe Flacco and Tyrod Taylor are among the signal-callers yet to sign....
