California mayor suddenly resigns hours before council investigation: Banana republic

Fairfield’s mayor abruptly resigned Tuesday just hours before city leaders were set to consider the findings of a contentious residency investigation that had clouded her final months in office.Catherine Moy stepped down ahead of a special City Council meeting called to address questions about whether she met the residency requirements to serve as mayor, ending months of political turmoil before the council could act.The mayor’s seat sat empty during the meeting, leaving Vice Mayor Pam Bertani to lead proceedings as acting mayor, reported ABC10.“I did not see this coming,” Bertani said.An outside attorney hired to review the matter found there was insufficient evidence to determine that Moy lived outside Fairfield, but left it to the City Council to decide whether any action was warranted.Moy resigned before that discussion could even take place.

In a resignation letter, she described the residency probe as politically motivated and accused four council members of targeting her while wasting taxpayer money.With Moy no longer in office, city officials said the investigation has effectively come to an end.However, the controversy continued to divide residents during public comment.“We look like a banana republic,” one speaker told the council.

“This was nothing but a political hit job, so the corrupt can continue ruling,” another said.“There is no one in the City of Fairfield that is more Fairfield than Cat Moy.Her parents were here, she was raised here, she raised her family here, she got married here,” a third resident said.Others argued the mayor had brought the situation upon herself.“No special interest were behind this, this was Cat burning her own career down.
