Rifflandia Festival to Permanently Close After 18 Years

Canada’s beloved Rifflandia Festival will permanently cease operations after 18 years, according to a blog post shared by its founders, Nick Blasko and Casey Austin.They said the Rifflandia team had hoped to stage one final edition in 2026, but lamented the festival’s future was no longer viable.

That public affection, however, was never enough to solve Rifflandia’s financial reality.The festival never sold enough tickets to cover its operating costs and had run at a loss since its first edition, according to Blasko and Austin’s post.

At the same time, the pair emphasized the festival’s broader impact on the region, pointing to the jobs, tourism, services and arts activity it generated each year.The decision appears to have been shaped by several mounting pressures rather than a single setback.

The team cited the difficulty of securing a downtown Victoria venue with the right scale, rising infrastructure expenses and increasingly challenging artist costs, especially while trying to keep tickets affordable for fans.“For every one of its operating years, Rifflandia Festival has been a labour of love and a gift to our city,” the statement reads.

“Rifflandia Festival doesn’t, and has never, sold enough tickets to cover its costs.It has operated at a loss since the very first edition in 2008.” Rifflandia had already adapted many times over its lifespan.
