American boy, 12, attacked by shark while swimming at Bahamas resort

A young American boy was attacked by a shark while swimming with his brother at a resort town in the Bahamas, police said.The 12-year-old victim, who officials didn’t identify by name, was on a family tour of the Exuma Cays on Tuesday when he decided to go swimming with his brother.The boy was on Staniel Cay island when the terrifying shark attack took place around 3:30 p.m., the Royal Bahamas Police Force said.The boy was rushed onto a boat and taken to New Providence — the most populous island in the Bahamas — where he received medical treatment, authorities added.He was listed in stable condition Wednesday, although police have yet to release more information on his injuries.Authorities also did not specify what kind of shark attacked the 12-year-old.Despite shark attacks being relatively rare in the Bahamas, the nation of more than 700 Caribbean islands has just 29 incidents on record, according to the International Shark Attack File database.That alone, however, is enough to rank the Bahamas ninth for the most unprovoked shark attacks in the world, according to the database, which puts the US at the top of the list with 1,441 incidents.The latest bite comes nearly a year after a 63-year-old American was wounded by a shark while spearfishing along the Big Grand Cay in a remote stretch of the Bahamas’ Abaco Islands.
