3 NYC residents died from heat during last weeks scorcher, new figures show

Three New York City residents tragically died during last week’s extreme heat wave, City Hall said Monday. The trio died in their homes over the weekend, when temperatures soared to near-triple digits, according to Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s rep, Joe Calvello.“Our hearts are with their families and loved ones,” Calvello said in a statement. The names of the deceased were not immediately made available. At least 22 suspected heat-related deaths were reported in New Jersey, too, as part of a national death toll that surpassed two dozen, according to The Guardian. The heartbreaking news comes after the Big Apple reported 21 deaths as a direct result of heat in 2025, 19 of which resulted from exposure to a four-day heat wave last June. That figure marked the highest number of heat-related deaths in the city in at least a decade and the only time the toll reached double digits.More than 50% of New Yorkers who have died in their homes from the heat since 2016 had no air conditioning, according to city Health Department data.
