Thieves steal over $4.5M worth of jewelry from French glass museum months after infamous Lourve heist

Millions of dollars’ worth of jewelry was stolen by a crew of burglars at the museum of French luxury glassmaker Lalique in a brazen early-morning theft — just months after the infamous jewel heist at the Louvre in Paris.The gang of masked thieves broke into the museum in Wingen-sur-Moder in northeastern France around 5:30 a.m.on Sunday, a source told Agence France-Presse, CBS News reported.Roughly 20 pieces of jewelry were snatched from the museum after the gang of burglars headed for the jewelry room and smashed open six display cases, according to CBS and France24.“The loss is currently being assessed but could amount to several million euros, likely close to four million [over $4.5 million],” the source told the AFP.“An alarm went off, but by the time the security company had completed its checks, it was a cleaning lady who arrived first on the scene and called the police,” the source added. A notice posted to the museum’s website said it will be “closed for several days” following “a burglary.”The museum is dedicated to René Lalique, a French jeweler and glassmaker of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods.The building, which opened in 2011 near the company’s factory, features over 650 “exceptional works” of jewelry, crystal, and perfume bottles.The stunt comes just months after thieves made off with $102 million worth of precious jewels from the Louvre in a raid that lasted less than 8 minutes in October.Investigators are now reviewing CCTV footage at the Lalique Museum....
