Michigan AD Warde Manuel fights back with job in jeopardy over scandals

Michigan’s athletic director Warde Manuel is defending his accomplishments despite his job being in jeopardy due to an ongoing investigation.ESPN reported on Monday that Michigan’s regents will discuss an investigation into the school’s athletic culture, including a conversation on the future of Manuel.The university commissioned the investigation in December after football coach Sherrone Moore was fired for an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.“I don’t need the credit [for Michigan’s success],” Manuel told The Michigan Insider, “but I’m not going to stand idly by and let people say all this happened despite Warde Manuel.”Manuel said it is not his intention to leave Michigan, but as his job is in jeopardy, the athletic director admits he has had several conversations with Michigan leadership about a potential buyout of his contract.He has four years left on a contract extension he signed in December 2024, with an average annual compensation of $2.4 million, according to ESPN.“I love this place,” Manuel said.“My blood, sweat and tears are somewhere in Michigan Stadium and on the fields of play and in Schembechler Hall and on the track.
