Fresno Zoo gets 4th of July surprise with adorable baby lion cubs

It’s the circle of life.A Northern California Zoo got quite the surprise on the Fourth of July when one of its African lions had a fireworks show of her own — giving birth to a couple of adorable baby lion cubs.As the rest of the town was preparing to celebrate America’s 250th birthday Saturday, one of Fresno Chaffee Zoo’s lions, Zamaya, welcomed her second litter of cubs.Pictures from behind the scenes show the cutest little cubs snuggling close to their mom and each other while they sleep, as they continue to be monitored by the zoo’s animal care and veterinary teams. In one video, Zamaya takes her time giving one of her little ones a bath as they stay close, huddled next to her.“Fresno Chaffee Zoo is excited to expand our lion pride with the addition of two new cubs,” General Curator Nicole Presley said.“Zamaya is doing a great job, as expected, and is recovering well.”Though everyone will be eager to get a first glimpse at the little lions up close and personal, for now officials said visitors will have to wait.“Both mom and the cubs will stay behind-the-scenes until they have received all their vaccines and are ready to meet the public and the rest of our lion pride,” per zoo officials. The cubs are the second litter for lioness Zamaya and male lion Chisulo. The big-cat couple welcomed their first cubs, Taraj and Asali, in 2024, and both still live at the zoo.The births are also a boost for a species facing an uncertain future.“In their natural habitat, the African lion population is considered ‘vulnerable’ according to the IUCN Red List,” per the announcement about the lion cubs births.
