Updated British Open odds after Round 2: Bryson DeChambeau makes odds jump despite controversial rules infraction
The rules of golf can be just as cruel as the game itself. After scoring a 4-under-66 and catapulting to one stroke off the lead at The Open, Bryson DeChambeau was assessed a two-stroke penalty for trampling fescue to improve his lie back on the fifth hole. As DeChambeau and the rules officials returned to the site to discuss the infraction, he was temporarily removed from DraftKings before the ruling was finalized, with his outright odds later reappearing at +980.His playing status for the rest of the tournament remains in question as DeChambeau’s agent said he will decide in the morning whether he will continue. Now at 5-under overall, DeChambeau sits four strokes behind leader Lucas Herbert, who surged into first place with an 8-under 62 on Friday. Herbert and Sam Burns both carded the lowest single-round score in major championship history.
Herbert narrowly missed the chance to hold the record alone after a closing bogey, but still holds a two-stroke lead over Jackson Suber, Cameron Young and Ryan Gerard, while Burns sits tied for fourth after a remarkable turnaround from his 3-over 73 in the opening round.Herbert’s price to win the British Open is now listed at +950, the third-best odds on the board. Five other players had previously shot 62 in a major championship, with the most recent coming from Xander Schauffele and Shane Lowry, who both accomplished the feat during the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club.Yet, Scottie Scheffler still hasn’t budged as the +580 odds favorite to win the tournament.He heads into Moving Day at T8 and four strokes off the lead after shooting a 2-under 68. Scheffler struggled with his putting early, making just 21 feet, seven inches of putts through his first 13 holes per ESPN before finally breaking through on the par-5 14th with his second birdie.Young gained big ground on him, however, now being listed at +650.
