Hillsborough was at the far end of the cloud, where the largest rocks came down, and the only recovered rock was the one that hit the house.The homeowner heard a “loud crash” at the time and found a hole in the ceiling in the master bedroom, along with a strong sulfur-like odor and black fragments that covered the bed and carpet. The rock’s pristine condition has been vital for research, thanks to the homeowner carefully preserving the fragments immediately after impact and storing pieces in glass jars.The meteorite is only the second observed fall of a primitive CM1/2 carbonaceous chondrite, a rare class of space rocks that preserves some of the oldest material in the solar system.
