Alex Murdaugh ranks among South Carolinas biggest tax deadbeats while awaiting new murder trial

As Alex Murdaugh awaits a new trial in the murders of his wife and son, the disgraced former attorney is facing a separate seven-figure problem.Murdaugh owes more than $1.6 million in unpaid South Carolina taxes, penalties and interest, ranking him among the state’s biggest individual tax delinquents, according to newly published records.The South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) listed "Murdaugh, Richard" as owing $1,630,201.02 in its latest quarterly report of top delinquent taxpayers, published July 16.The debt is the fourth-largest attributed to an individual on the state’s current list.The agency said it publishes the names and outstanding balances of delinquent taxpayers as part of an effort to promote "transparency, fairness and compliance."Alex Murdaugh attends a judicial hearing on Monday, June 29, 2026, at the Marc H.
