Secrecy surrounds 49ers coach Kyle Shanahans horrific crash: Kind of sketchy

SANTA CLARA — Some 49ers players went more than a week without hearing about their head coach’s condition, and the man tasked with taking his place only learned the full scale of his responsibilities in the news release the team put out a day before training camp began.The new details revealed Sunday underscored the secrecy and uncertainty surrounding the car crash that left Kyle Shanahan bleeding from the head, concussed and with multiple broken bones. For the shockwaves the story sent through the NFL when the news broke Saturday morning, it was almost as stunning to league insiders that the 49ers were able to keep it under wraps for almost two weeks and make it public on their own terms.One NFL source said it was “crazy” that the news didn’t get out until the team issued a release moments before general manager John Lynch’s news conference to open camp.Another described the situation as “kind of sketchy.” While a third said it was “not unusual,” given that it occurred during a dead period of the offseason and didn’t involve any arrests.Shanahan made a brief cameo at the 49ers’ first practice of training camp Sunday morning, 12 days after the accident, wearing a cast on his left hand but otherwise showing no signs of the collision that reportedly left him with two black eyes, a broken nose and multiple broken ribs.He wore a black baseball cap, sunglasses and a thick mustache, and he didn’t emerge until after the period of practice that was open to cameras shooting photos and video.“I told him he had a great disguise with the sunglasses on,” said linebacker Fred Warner, one of a handful of veterans to pass by the head coach during the 30 minutes or so he observed.Warner was among the first 49ers players to find out about the accident, via word from Shanahan’s wife, Mandy, who passed the news along to his wife, Sydney.“Of course my first reaction was just trying to make sure everybody’s good, everybody’s OK,” Warner said.
