A valuable trade piece may have just watched his value sink.Reds infielder and outfielder Spencer Steer was placed on the 10-day injured list on Monday with a sprained wrist, per ESPN’s Buster Olney.The injury comes a day after Steer had to leave an at-bat against Cardinals starter Kyle Leahy because of an odd swing.Steer reached for a low-and-away pitch, fouling it off down the first-base line, before hopping out of the batter box and shaking his right arm.The Reds right-handed batter was replaced by Edwin Arroyo after a quick conversation with manager Terry Francona and an athletic trainer.“He didn’t fight me to come out of that game,” Francona said.“That makes me nervous.
We’ll get him looked at, we’ll get him imaged, and then they’re setting up an appointment with the hand specialist.”Steer, who’s slashed .242/.327/.421 to go along with 16 homers and 40 RBIs this season, was one of the best right-handed hitters on the trade market.ESPN had the 28-year-old as the “Reds’ best trade asset” due to his defensive versatility, offensive ability and the fact his contract has two additional years of club control after the 2026 season.Now expected to miss significant time, it’s unlikely Steer will be moved before the Aug.3 trade deadline.Teams like the Mariners, Red Sox, Phillies and Yankees were all rumored to be interested in Steers’ service, but will have to look elsewhere.The injury to Steer could however put the Reds fully into the selling category.
