More Americans now use weed every day than drink or smoke cigarettes

Americans are hitting record highs.For the first time, more Americans now use marijuana on a daily or near-daily basis than alcohol or tobacco, a bombshell new survey has found.Approximately 21.4 million Americans age 12 or over used marijuana daily in 2025, according to newly released data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).In contrast, only 17.2 million Americans drank alcohol every day or most days, defined as 20 or more days in 30 days, the data from the federal National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) found.Daily or near-daily cannabis use has also overtaken cigarette use, with 19.9 million Americans smoking regularly.And the figures over time are a study in opposites.Tobacco and alcohol use has been plummeting, down 28% and 24% since 2021.Daily pot use — including smoking and edibles — surged 21%.

The survey shows alcohol fell to fourth place in the list of American vices, behind nicotine vaping, which saw 17.5 million daily users in 2025.While far more Americans drink overall — including occasional drinkers — marijuana users are overwhelmingly more likely to have a regular habit, the study shows.Roughly 129 million Americans age 12 and older reported consuming alcohol in the past month, compared to 43.8 million who said they had used marijuana in the past month.But only 13% of monthly alcohol consumers drank daily, compared to between 40 and 50% of monthly cannabis users who admitted using the drug daily.The study also revealed several startling trends about different age groups and their use of various substances.While the death of drinking among Gen Z and younger millennials has been widely reported, this doesn’t mean that they are turning to marijuana instead.Among 18-to 25-year-olds, roughly 10-12% reported daily or near-daily marijuana use, while only 3-5% drank and 9.6% smoked cigarettes daily or near-daily.But it was among adults aged 26 and over where daily cannabis use has accelerated rapidl...
