Exclusive | Bandaged Kyle Shanahan seen for first time since violent car wreck

Kyle Shanahan is still sporting a cast on his left hand two weeks after he broke it during a terrifying car crash, new photos of the San Francisco 49ers head coach show.The pictures, obtained by the California Post, were snapped Tuesday afternoon as Shanahan was returning to his Palo Alto home from Niners practice in Santa Clara.Shanahan donned an olive-colored shirt, light blue pants and some Crocs, and did not appear to have any other bandaging on his body other than the one around his hand.The images marked the first time Shanahan’s been captured on camera since he sustained significant injuries during a July 14 two-vehicle accident.California's top news, sports and entertainment delivered to your inbox every day.

Never miss a story Shanahan told reporters in a private meeting on Tuesday he was driving at a speed of around 20 mph on a roadway near his home when he dropped his phone.“It was stuck in my seat,” the coach said.“I took my eyes off the road looking for my phone, and my car veered into someone.”In addition to the mangled hand, Shanahan suffered a broken nose, fractured ribs and a facial wound that required 40 stitches to mend.His good friend and former NFL quarterback Chris Simms said the force of the collision was so violent, Shanahan nearly lost an eye as well.“I was really lucky,” Shanahan said.
“I’m just lucky that I survived, that [the other driver] didn’t get hurt, and that I didn’t lose my eye.”Shanahan was additionally diagnosed with a concussion, and because he’s still dealing with lingering effects from the head trauma, he’s been limited to begin the start of Niners training camp.Assistant coach Chris Foerster has been the acting interim head coach in Shanahan’s stead.The Niners are slated to open their season against the Rams on Sept.10 in Australia.Californ...
