PGA Tour hands six-month ban to Trey Mullinax over doping violation

Trey Mullinax has been suspended six months for violating the PGA Tour’s anti-doping policy.The Tour announced Wednesday that Mullinax tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency.Mullinax, 34, will be eligible to return to competition on Jan.16, 2027.

The Tour said he cooperated fully during its investigation and accepted the suspension.In a statement, Mullinax said he recently used medication to treat a condition that was originally diagnosed while he was in college but failed to receive approval under the Tour’s anti-doping policy before taking it.“I take full responsibility for what happened,” Mullinax said in a statement provided by the Tour.“My lack of knowledge is not an excuse.”Mullinax denied knowingly using the substance to improve his play.“I want to be absolutely clear — I have never taken any substance with the intention of gaining a competitive advantage,” he said.

“Anyone who knows me knows how much I respect this game and the values it represents.”Mullinax added that he accepts the consequences and plans to use the suspension as a learning experience before returning next year.“Golf has given me so much, and I never want one mistake to define the respect I have for the game or for the people who support me,” Mullinax said.The Alabama product has made only three combined starts on the PGA and Korn Ferry tours this season, missing the cut in all three events.Mullinax, the 544th-ranked player in the world, earned his lone PGA Tour victory at the 2022 Barbasol Championship, defeating Kevin Streelman by one stroke. He also owns two career Korn Ferry Tour victories.Mullinax joins a short list of golfers publicly disciplined under the PGA Tour’s PED policy, including Doug Barron, Scott Stallings, Bhavik Patel and Brad Fritsch....
