The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry has unveiled a new framework aimed at keeping AI-generated music in check on the charts that matter most to the industry.The rules set out conditions that AI-assisted tracks must meet before they can appear on official music charts worldwide.
Ad 0:00 Click for sound 0:00 / 0:00 The organization says a recording made with generative AI tools can only qualify for chart placement if it clears three main bars: the AI service behind it must be properly licensed, the track must be substantially human made, and the release cannot involve any form of stream or chart manipulation.The move builds on an earlier industry push for standardized labeling, which asks streaming services to distinguish between tracks labeled “AI-Generated” and those labeled “AI-Assisted.” Together, the two initiatives aim to draw a firmer line around what counts as a legitimate recording as AI tools become easier to use and harder to detect.
Many AI music generators today, like Suno and Udio, have allegedly been trained on copyrighted recordings without permission from the artists or labels involved, a practice that has fueled dozens of lawsuits.“Official music charts do more than just track sales; they celebrate human artistry and endeavor,” IFPI CEO Victoria Oakley said in a statement.
