Raiders training camp battle hits stalemate amid serious positional concern
The Las Vegas Raiders entered training camp expecting a competition at quarterback.Instead, their most concerning stalemate has developed at wide receiver.Tre Tucker and Jalen Nailor have the early advantage for the top two spots, while Jack Bech, Dont’e Thornton Jr.
and rookie Malik Benson rotate through first-team drills.None of them have separated from the group, per ESPN’s Ryan McFadden.That uncertainty has had it’s effect on the offense.
Kirk Cousins, who was recently named the team’s starting quarterback, instead targeted most of his passes toward tight ends Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer or checked down to running back Ashton Jeanty.Among the three WR3 candidates, Bech offers the safest option.He caught 20 of 29 targets for 224 yards last season, producing a 69% catch rate and 1.15 yards per route run.
He was particularly effective on crossing and hitch routes, fitting the profile of a dependable possession receiver.Cousins praised his strong hands, work ethic and ability.“[I] really like Jack’s game,” Cousins said to the media.
“I think he’s got really strong hands.He’s a great teammate.”Meanwhile, Thornton brings considerably more volatility.
His average target traveled 16.6 yards downfield, twice Bech’s 8.3-yard mark, and 30% of his receptions produced gains of at least 20 yards.However, Thornton caught only 10 of 30 targets and averaged 0.54 yards per route.
He can stretch a defense, but his 33.3% catch rate makes him difficult to trust consistently.Benson, the 2026 sixth rounder, offers speed, reliable deep-ball tracking and punt-return ability.He caught 11 of 17 targets traveling at least 20 yards in 2025 and tied for third in the Big Ten with 15 explosive receptions.
