Single Michigan mother and 2-month-old son found dead in bathtub: I was heartbroken

A single Michigan mother of three and her newborn son were discovered dead in a bathtub — sending a local community reeling with questions over the sudden loss.Police rushed to an apartment in Waterford Township around 10:30 p.m.and found a 36-year-old mother and her 2-month-old son who “appeared to have drowned in the bathtub,” the Waterford Township Police Department said in a statement.

The mother, identified by local outlets as Desiree Wheeler, and her baby were given life-saving measures on the scene and later pronounced dead at local hospitals.Though police said the cause of the mother and son’s deaths was drowning, a spokesperson for the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office told The Post their cause and manner of death are still pending.  Investigators are also still awaiting toxicology results, police said.Wheeler was a beloved single mother of three in the tight-knit community and was known for always being with her children, according to her neighbors.

“She did everything with her kids, everything.She was always smiling, she was always happy,” neighbor Laurie Medaris told CBS News Detroit.

“Oh, I was heartbroken, heartbroken; she didn’t do that, Medaris said.Wheeler’s next-door-neighbor, Sue Carey, also saw the adoring mother with her 13-year-old and baby just hours before police made the grim discovery.

“Her and the 13-year-old and the baby came out, and she said, ‘Hey, neighbor.’ I said, ‘Hey, neighbor.’ I said, ‘How the baby doing?’ She said, ‘Good, fine,’ and they went in, and that was the last of her that we knew,” Carey told the outlet.The neighbor then saw cops rush the mother and her baby out of the home as Wheeler’s teen son watched in horror.

“He couldn’t really mumble words to tell us what had happened and went on so,” Carey said.“Really gut-wrenching to hear her family cry, and it just plays over and over in my head.”...
