Spotify to Label AI Artists and Evict Them From Recommendation Engine

If you suspect your new favorite musician is just a glorified algorithm in a leather jacket, Spotify’s newest update will confirm your fears.Ad 0:00 Click for sound 0:00 / 0:00 The streaming giant has announced a new labeling system that will directly flag AI-generated artist identities, marking its latest effort to curb synthetic personas that impersonate or mimic human musicians.
Starting in mid-September, an ‘AI Persona’ badge will begin appearing on select artist profiles, search results and track rows. The badge serves as a clear visual indicator that an artist’s public identity, including their display name and profile imagery, does not represent an actual human being.
“Listeners have been clear in telling us that they don’t like seeing an artist profile that seems human, only to find out that the persona is AI-generated,” reads a blog post from Spotify.Spotify is also altering its recommendation engines in lockstep.
By default, profiles tagged as AI Personas will be excluded from all editorial and algorithmic playlists.Users will only see these AI-generated acts in personalized feeds if they explicitly choose to follow them.
“That means you won’t see any music from AI Personas in your personalized recommendations, unless you follow AI Personas, for example,” the company said.“While we believe all artists have creative choice in determining how they present themselves, Spotify’s programming is focused on elevating music from authentic artists building careers in music.” Creators can self-disclose their synthetic identity through the Spotify for Artists dashboard.
However, Spotify is not relying solely on voluntary reporting. The company will actively review profiles using defined audience thresholds to identify photorealistic, computer-generated personas across its most visited pages.
