The global nighttime economy generates trillions of dollars each year, but municipal leaders have long lacked a standard metric to assess the artistic and social life that unfolds after dark.To address that gap, the organizers of the Amsterdam Dance Event have partnered with the research consultancy VibeLab to produce the ‘Nighttime Culture Index,’ a platform designed to measure the cultural value of nightlife economies.
Ad 0:00 Click for sound 0:00 / 0:00 The initiative will debut in October during the 30th anniversary edition of ADE, the world’s preeminent electronic music summit.According to a press release, the project focuses on six distinct dimensions of civic health: diversity, creative ecology, space and infrastructure, community belonging, policy health, and environmental sustainability.
“As we celebrate 30 years of ADE, it’s a good moment to reflect,” said VibeLab co-founder Mirik Milan, who is also Amsterdam’s former Night Mayor.“ADE gave me a platform to develop as a creative professional, and the Nighttime Culture Index is how I give back, turning local nighttime scenes into a connected, global advocacy network.” The initial rollout covers six cities across six continents: Amsterdam, Lagos, New York, São Paulo, Seoul and Sydney.
Together, these initial city profiles demonstrate that while the financial output of nightlife can be measured with uniform formulas, the underlying cultural ecosystems operate on distinctly local terms.Amsterdam serves as a model for institutional night governance while New York illustrates the tension between venue preservation and aggressive commercial real estate development.
