Troy Aikman makes surprising Dolphins dig after signing on as team consultant

The Miami Dolphins are going to be one of the worst teams in the NFL — just ask one of their team consultants, Troy Aikman.Aikman was brought in as a consultant to advise the team on its search for a general manager at the end of last season, but it was later revealed that his role would be longer term.When asked recently about how his role isn’t a conflict of interest with his current gig as a “Monday Night Football” broadcaster for ESPN, Aikman had some pretty shocking comments that put his team down.“The Dolphins are not expected to be very good this year,” Aikman said on the “Dallas Dialogue With Dave” podcast.“They’re getting out of cap hell, so there’s no Monday night game with the Dolphins this year.”Jon-Eric Sullivan has since taken over the general manager role for the Dolphins, and Aikman remains in the fold at owner Stephen Ross’ behest. This conversation, among others, could be a piece of his ongoing negotiation with ESPN as he and Joe Buck will be free agents after the 2026 season, according to Front Office sports.Much has been made about the Raiders’ minority owner Tom Brady being a broadcaster for Fox Sports, though Aikman was keen to point out that he doesn’t own any stake in the Dolphins.“So it looks similar, but I’m not so sure that is,” Aikman said in April. Aikman working with Miami is an interesting wrinkle in this NFL season as the former Cowboys quarterback and the Dolphins staff have a lot of work ahead of them.Miami’s salary cap is a mess, with most of their money tied up in players no longer on the team, including a $55 million dead cap hit tied to ex-quarterback Tua Tagovailoa and massive hits from Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Jalen Ramsey and Minkah Fitzpatrick.Malik Willis is the new quarterback in Miami after moving on from Tagovailoa.Miami opens the season in Las Vegas before traveling to San Francisco and finally hosting the Chiefs in their home opener Sept.
