Ketel Marte headed back to Arizona for MRI in twist after shocking no-show in Boston

Ketel Marte is on his way home.After the Diamondbacks’ three-time All-Star mysteriously missed Monday’s road game in Boston, Marte is heading back to Arizona to undergo an MRI on his knee, per Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.

The Diamondbacks completed a three-game series in Atlanta on Sunday and Marte traveled with the team to Boston for this three-game set.Yet, he became difficult to track down and Arizona was placed him on the restricted list — a designation for players away from the team without a reason and without pay — for the second time in his career.According to ESPN, Marte was in Boston on Tuesday and was handling a “personal situation.”He and his family reportedly are “fine,” and he is in communication with his team.Following the 11-1 loss to the Red Sox, manager Tore Lovullo appeared to be fighting back tears while trying to best explain the situation — one he didn’t have all the answers to.“I just love for him and care for him, he’ll be OK,” Luvullo said before adding Marte was dealing with a “personal issue” and he had limited contact with him monday.“I just was doing my best to reach out to him.There was very little coming back,” he said.The Diamondbacks waited as long as possible to see if Marte would report to the game.

They only posted their lineup 15 minutes out from first pitch at Fenway Park, announcing Jose Fernandez was recalled from Triple-A Reno.It is the first game the 32-year-old no-showed in 12 years as a pro.It was also the Diamondbacks’ (66-60) worst loss of the second half of the season.“We deal with a lot as baseball managers and coaches and teachers,” Luvullo said.
