Fernando Mendoza gets extensive first-team reps in Raiders joint practice with Texans

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Fernando Mendoza took a huge step in his NFL development.On Tuesday, Mendoza received extensive first-team reps during the Raiders’ joint practice with the Houston Texans.

The No.1 pick worked with the starters for the first time in a session, a test from head coach Klint Kubiak.

“I wanted to see him going against the Texans’ ones,” Kubiak said.“That was our plan all along.

I thought he did some good things.I look forward to watching the tape.

But just he and his teammates, all these young guys that we’re playing, we’ve got to get them up to speed real quick.”Mendoza played in the Raiders’ preseason-opening loss against the Arizona Cardinals, completing 10 of 16 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown in four drives.He admitted playing in the NFL is a “different level.”Tuesday’s joint practice was a step up in terms of competition.

Mendoza faced a premier opponent in the Texans, who had the No.1 ranked defense last season in yardage allowed.

Though he was by no means perfect, Mendoza managed to connect with tight end Brock Bowers for a large gain after dropping back and evading pressure.The rookie earned high praise from Houston defensive end Will Anderson Jr.following the joint practice.

“Ton of respect for him…He’s going to be a really great quarterback in this league,” Anderson said.While Kubiak named Kirk Cousins as the starting quarterback ahead of training camp, Mendoza is the future for Las Vegas.
