Teen charged 17 months after his mom, half-brother murdered as disturbing evidence emerges

A teen who claimed he was asleep when his mom and younger brother were shot dead in their Utah home has been charged with their murders 17 months later — after cops found disturbing messages about his hatred for his mom.The boy was just 15 when his mother, Jessica Lyman, 44, and half-brother Eli Painter, 8, were fatally shot in the head at their home in Sarasota Springs on March 27, 2025, with his horrified 17-year-old sister finding the bodies the next morning.“He claimed to have been sleeping and stated he had not heard the gunshots, (his sister’s) frantic and high-volume conversation with 911, which took place immediately next to his bedroom, or the initial entry of multiple officers and EMT personnel,” officials wrote in court docs obtained by KSL. However, surveillance footage from a neighbor’s house appeared to catch him in a shouting match just before the shots rang out — and then wearing a mask while leaving to dispose of the murder weapon, the court docs alleged.“Near midnight, a woman’s voice, consistent with (Lyman’s) can be heard shouting … ‘What are you doing?!'” the docs said of voices “consistent” with the suspect and the victims.“Less than two minutes later, three gunshots are heard: one, followed by a brief pause, and then two in very rapid succession.(The teen) later admitted in a police interview that he and (his mother) had argued that night,” the documents stated.Less than three hours later, “a figure in a mask is seen on several different home surveillance cameras in the neighborhood,” the documents stated.“This figure is the same height and the same build” as the suspect and “the mask and some clothing items are consistent with items” the boy was known to wear, the docs alleged.“Based on the path of travel in the surveillance video as well as time periods where the masked figure is not visible, (he) could have disposed of the murder weapon in several locations,” including a nearby river that wa...
