LIV Golf laying off almost everybody as next chapter begins

LIV Golf is going forward with its plan to lay off the “majority” of its United States and United Kingdom employees in the first week of September, Sportico reported.This staff reduction is being presented as a way to secure the flailing league’s future after Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) ended its financial backing.LIV Golf reportedly filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice in July in preparation for such a move.“We are scaling back operations as we transition to the next chapter of LIV Golf and work toward making LIV 2.0 a reality,” a LIV spokesperson told Sportico.“We are grateful to our employees for their hard work and dedication in building LIV Golf, and we remain committed to supporting those affected through this transition.”While expected, this is a sad development for the rival league that has taken blow after blow over the past few months.There are questions about the future of the league without having the backing of the PIF, but The Post exclusively reported last month that the league landed a new financial backer.The new support is expected to be providing roughly $250 million-$300 million for what is being branded LIV 2.0.LIV Golf’s stars met with the individual — reportedly Ted Goldthorope of BC Partners — recently.Goldthorpe has not been publicly named by LIV.“You have a visionary, charismatic, driven, well-connected leader, investor, businessman who answered questions with grace, shared his vision, and I think was able to convey a lot of the things that players and GMs and my colleagues wanted to hear,” LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil said last week, per Sportico.“It was a fantastic meeting.”LIV Golf prematurely concluded its 2026 season over the weekend, and the plan is for a 10-event schedule moving forward, per Sportico.The league projects it will be profitable after three years, according to Sportico, despite reportedly losing more than $1.1 billion from 2022-24....
