Regrettable statsI had to chuckle reading Rafael Mangual’s piece boasting about murders and shootings being down 19% (“Policing Pays,” PostOpinion, Aug.31).The same graph shows car theft up by 144% and all major felonies up by 23%. Shootings and murders, as the article discusses, are largely confined to gang members shooting and killing each other.

Meanwhile, all major felonies, including car theft, make victims of the rest of us, as we lead our law-abiding lives. I’m sure a great many of your readers would prefer seeing car theft down by 19%, and would be blithely unbothered if the murder rate among gang members were to switch places on the graph. Desmond HusseyWilton, Conn.Dem deceptionThis piece  perfectly illustrates the Democrats’ tactic of lying to you and insulating you from the truth (“Why Albany Hates Excellent Schools,” Wai Wah Chin, PostOpinion, Sept.2)They’ll tell you public schools are improving  — despite dismal student performance — and that charter schools rob money from public schools and perform no better.
