Geraldo Perdomo leaves Diamondback game after getting drilled by line drive in scary scene

Arizona Diamondbacks’ shortstop and leadoff hitter Geraldo Perdomo was drilled in the head with a line drive on Sunday while running the bases. In a 1-1 game against the Houston Astros in the top of the third inning, Ketel Marte hit a Peter Lambert pitch 93 MPH off the bat, sending Perdomo crashing to the ground between first and second base, holding his head as trainers and coaches rushed to his aid. Perdomo was declared out after he was unable to reach second base due to the injury. Just two at-bats later, Nolan Arenado hit a two-run home run to score Marte, making the score 3-1, and likely would have scored Perdomo had he not been struck by the ball. The Diamondbacks would still go on to win the game 3-2 without their leadoff hitter and star shortstop playing the rest of the contest. Perdomo was able to get up and leave the game under his own power and appears to have avoided a serious injury.“He is not in the concussion protocol,” Diamondbacks manager Tony Lovullo said.“He’s just in the observation stages.

We feel like we dodged a bullet.”Lovullo added that the team is calling the injury a head contusion and they believe that Perdomo could even return to the lineup as soon as Monday. Perdomo has been a valuable piece to the Diamondbacks’ puzzle the last few years, with last year being the best of his career, posting a seven WAR with a career-high 100 RBIs while possessing a high-quality glove at shortstop. He hasn’t posted those kinds of numbers this year, though, while batting leadoff with a .252 average which would be his lowest since 2023.The Diamondbacks, 76-68, are in the midst of a dog fight for the last wild-card spot, as they are just a half game ahead of the San Diego Padres.Arizona heads to Kansas City on Monday for the opening game of a three-game set....
