Sean McDermott reveals blind-spot investigation after Bills firing

Sean McDermott is already plotting out his next moves to land back in the NFL — and he’s learned some tough truths to start.The former Bills coach revealed on the “Rich Eisen Show” that he has gone back to people inside the organization to discover what could be improved upon now that he has a different perspective.“When you’re a head coach or a leader of any sort, you don’t always get this space to just live life and to reflect,” McDermott said.

“I’ve been reflecting on my journey in Buffalo.The good things, the things I’d like to do differently in the next go-around.”McDermott has resisted the urge to take on a role with a team as an assistant coach after being fired by the Bills following their overtime playoff loss to the Broncos. The 52-year-old still wants to be an NFL head coach, and apparently those inside the Bills building told McDermott that he could do a better job relating to the players, as he has investigated what went wrong since being fired.“It hit me between the eyes,” McDermott said of the feedback he got back from unnamed Bills personnel.

I think that just comes from getting so focused on the job and the task at hand.”McDermott went 98-50 and made the playoffs in seven of his eight years as head coach, but was never able to reach the Super Bowl — including two heartbreaking losses to the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game.McDermott did not mention whether he spoke to any players or, more specifically, his star quarterback Josh Allen.Allen is now being coached by his former offensive coordinator Joe Brady, who was on McDermott’s staff from 2022-25.“Doing some other types of reflection as well, which is asking other people and sort of a blind-spot type of exercise.
