How Zedd Reimagined Shania Twain's Biggest Hit Without Ever Having Heard It

Play Shania Twain’s ‘You’re Still the One’ for most people over 30 and you’ll watch their face change, because somewhere in there is a memory of six pounds asleep on their chest or parents slow-dancing in a kitchen that no longer exists.Play it for Zedd a few months ago, and you’d have watched him listen to it for the first time.

Somewhere out there is a Zedd multiverse where he grew up singing the iconic track on family road trips in the beat-up backseat of a Chrysler minivan.Years later, that same Zedd would have approached a remix like a bomb squad technician, snipping one wire at a time, terrified of the one cut that detonates countless wedding-video montages.

Thankfully, that’s not the Zedd we got.The real one grew up in Germany, where the song’s chokehold on our tear ducts wasn’t quite as strong.

“I’ve heard Shania’s music since I was little and she had huge hits in Germany, but for some reason I had never heard this particular song,” Zedd tells EDM.com in a video interview.That brings us today, when the chart-topping producer and avid gamer stepped into a surreal pop-culture triangle, teaming up with Twain herself for a collaborative remix of ‘You’re Still The One’ that dropped inside an interactive Candy Crush video.

Partnering with the franchise a decade after teaming up with M&Ms feels like an elaborate way for a competitive gamer to eventually end up back in the candy aisle, and it’s clear he never fixed the cavity on his sweet tooth.“Inherently my two biggest hobbies in my life are music and gaming, and they’re not even that different,” Zedd says.
