President Donald Trump’s proposal to send $5,000 checks to American adults if Republicans win both chambers of Congress is forcing Republicans to debate an idea more commonly associated with the Democratic side of the aisle: sending direct government payments to voters.Called a "socialist vote-buying scheme" by former GOP Rep.Bob Good of Virginia, the so-called "Trump Dividend" would only be handed down if Republicans keep the House and Senate in November, the president announced at the party's midterm convention in Dallas.Good warned that the checks would add to the national debt, which has topped $40 trillion.The plan could cost more than $1.2 trillion, based on estimates of roughly 240 million eligible adults.
