California boater dies after leaping off vessel into Shasta Lake to save his beloved dog

A California man died after plunging into a lake to rescue his dog.Geordan White, 60, of Redding was aboard a boat on Shasta Lake Friday morning when his pet jumped into the water, prompting White to go in after it, according to the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office.The incident unfolded around 9 a.m.near the Bailey Cove Boat Launch, when 911 dispatchers received a call from someone aboard a nearby vessel.

By clicking above you agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.Never miss a story White began struggling after entering the lake, and the caller attempted to help by tossing him a flotation device.But White could not maintain his hold on the floatation device and soon vanished beneath the surface, authorities said.A dive team later located and recovered White’s body from the lake.An autopsy is expected to determine the exact cause of death.The dog, meanwhile, survived the ordeal after the 911 caller managed to pull the animal safely from the water, according to the sheriff’s office.The department offered its condolences to White’s loved ones while issuing a reminder about the dangers of being in the water without proper safety equipment.“The Shasta County Sheriff’s Office extends our condolences to the victim’s loved ones,” the department said in a news release.
