Elderly hunter kills woman he mistook for deer as she walks with kids: cops

A Maryland hunter fatally shot a mother of five he mistook her for a deer as she walked through a Delaware field, cops said.Walter Moorhead, 74, was cuffed on manslaughter charges after he allegedly accidentally gunned down Santos Maria Chilel Soto, 39, on Friday evening in Ellendale, according to the Delaware State Police.Soto, of Georgetown, was walking through an open field with a man and two children around 7:40 p.m.

while Moorhead was hunting deer from a ground blind — or a camouflaged structure to hide a hunter from the sight of game animals, cops said.Moorhead believed he saw a deer and fired his rifle, instead striking Soto, police added.

Troopers rushed to the field and attempted to provide life-saving care to Soto before she was brought to an area hospital.She was later pronounced dead, according to authorities.

Moorhead, of Salisbury, Maryland, was hit with felony charges, including manslaughter recklessly causing the death of another person, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and first-degree reckless endangerment.Soto was a “beloved aunt” and a mother of five children, according to a GoFundMe to raise money to send her body back to Guatemala.“This heartbreaking situation has placed a heavy financial burden on the family at a time when they are grieving deeply,” the fundraiser said.Moorhead has since been released after posting a $43,000 cash bond....
