NYU Langone agrees to end care for trans minors, pay $8.5M in deal with Trump DOJ

NYU Langone has caved to the Trump Administration — agreeing to end transgender medical care for minors and pay the US Department of Justice $8.5 million after a short fight. The hospital network, which serves thousands of patients across New York City, Long Island and Westchester County, reached the settlement Friday to resolve the DOJ investigation into its care for transgender minors seeking treatment.“The Department of Justice is fighting to protect our nation’s children and working tirelessly to reach agreements with hospitals to end so-called ‘gender affirming care’ for minors,” said US Attorney General Todd Blanche in a statement.NYU Langone had been subpoenaed by the Trump administration in May for medical records on minors who received trans care, part of a nationwide DOJ probe into the practice that began in 2025.The new agreement between NYU Langone and the DOJ spares the hospital from having to hand over those medical records to the government — although at the cost of shutting down the entire program altogether.“NYU Langone has not entered into this settlement because of any wrongdoing and has affirmatively denied any wrongdoing or liability in the agreement,” spokesman Steve Ritea said in a statement.“We believe this resolution is in the best interests of our patients and their families, protecting them as well as our providers and the institution from prolonged litigation.”NYU Langone is now the second major New York hospital system in just weeks to strike a deal to kill its transgender medical care for youth patients and also pay the federal government.Mount Sinai Health System entered a similar settlement earlier this month.Other hospital systems that struck such deals are the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Texas Children’s Hospital, the Cleveland Clinic and Connecticut Children’s Hospital.“We appreciate that some of the nation’s largest and most prestigious hospital systems have agreed to cease harming mino...
