Big Brother’s watching the island.Nassau County drivers pass a Flock Safety camera roughly every 9.5 miles, making its residents some of the most heavily surveilled and tracked in the nation, according to independent data.The county now has more 330 Flock Safety cameras publicly mapped on over 3,200 miles of road, placing Nassau within the top 100 counties in the country for cameras per mile, according to open-source data compiled by DeFlock, an activist group tracking the company’s surveillance and expansion. That works out to roughly 105 Flock Safety cameras for every 1,000 miles of road — or one camera installed less than every 10 miles, according to the data.This places Nassau County residents within the top 3% of the most closely watched drivers in America, as the county’s massive Flock camera density topped more than 3,100 other counties nationwide, the data detailed. Flock Safety is a controversial brand of AI-powered cameras that scan and store info on every car that drives past, including license plates and distinct features like dents and bumper stickers. That data is then searchable to cops around the country and able to be used to track a vehicle’s movements.Neighboring Suffolk County, meanwhile, has a few hundred cameras mapped across roughly 7,100 miles of road, or about one every 33 miles, ranking it within the top 500 in the nation.However, it appears not all of the Flock Safety cameras in Suffolk County have been mapped by the activist site, leaving an unclear amount still unaccounted for, according to an analysis by The Post. The gap comes as Suffolk officials are seemingly looking to catch up — but just delayed a $4 million deal with Flock Safety for its controversial “Raven” listening system earlier this month.The county is continuing to explore a possible separate deal for more county-owned cameras with the brand. Last year, Nassau County inked its own, $1 million deal with Flock Safety to purchase an undisclosed amount of ...
