Bronx Zoo welcomes adorable snow leopard cub threatened by extinction

She hits the spot.An adorable new snow leopard cub whose species is at risk of extinction is now on display at the Bronx Zoo, officials announced Wednesday. Four-month-old Sarka is on the prowl at the Himalayan Highlands exhibit — where the frisky feline is lapping up attention from animal lovers.“There’s a new face in the Himalayan Highlands! A female snow leopard cub was born this summer to mother Dariga and father Moutig,” the Zoo announced in a Facebook post Wednesday.“According to her keepers, she is enjoying exploring the habitat as well as seeing snow leopards in the neighboring exhibits.”The zoo currently has eight snow leopards, which are native to the high-altitude mountains of the Tibetan Plateau and the Himalaya in Asia, and are considered “vulnerable” to extinction.The little white fluffball, who was born on May 31, is shown playfully pouncing over rocks in the exhibit and being licked by her mom in footage posted by the zoo.An estimated 5,000 to 7,000 snow leopards remain in the wild across Asia and are largely threatened by livestock herders, habitat degradation and poaching....
