NJ congresswoman gives birth as she awaits federal trial for allegedly assaulting cops at an anti-ICE protest

Rep.LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) announced the birth of her daughter Thursday as she awaits trial on federal charges connected to a violent anti-ICE protest that could send her to prison for more than a decade. “Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply grateful to welcome this beautiful, healthy baby into the world,” McIver, 40, said in a statement. “There really aren’t words to describe how blessed my family feels to welcome a new life into the world,” the congresswoman continued.
“Getting the chance to raise a family is a priority and a delight for me, something I hope everyone who wants to, gets the chance to do.” McIver, who also has a 10-year-old daughter, added that “Bringing a child into the world is a reminder not only of why we fight for maternal healthcare and reproductive rights, but of why we fight for the rights and freedoms of our most vulnerable – they are someone’s babies too.”The first-term congresswoman is in the midst of a legal battle with the Trump administration stemming from a May 2025 dust-up outside the embattled Delaney Hall ICE facility in Newark. McIver is facing three federal charges related to assaulting, impeding and interfering with federal law enforcement officers. During the scrum, the congresswoman allegedly slammed her forearm into one federal law enforcement officer and tried to grab him and used each of her forearms to forcibly strike a second officer, according to the prosecutors. In August, a federal appeals court denied McIver’s bid to have the charges thrown out – ruling that the Constitution’s Speech or Debate Clause does not provide her with legislative immunity for the acts of violence alleged in her indictment. She faces a maximum of 17 years behind bars if convicted of all charges. McIver is only the fifteenth-ever member of Congress to give birth while serving. She joins the likes of Sens.
