Sleepy Hollow homeowners brace for spooky season onslaught of Halloween crowds

Every October, thousands of tourists descend upon Sleepy Hollow, NY, for “spooktacular” celebrations surrounding Halloween.In fact, last year the area, located about 25 miles north of midtown Manhattan, had around 200,000 visitors for its fall festivities.While videos on TikTok highlight the massive crowds that descend on the the area each weekend in October, many Sleepy Hollow homeowners still seem to embrace the season and everything it entails.Sleepy Hollow resident and Compass real estate agent Trevor Goodman, who closed on his townhome in the area on Oct.
31 last year, says that while there are downsides to the annual Halloween rush, for him it was part of the draw.“Yes, there is some frustration among Sleepy Hollow residents during the Halloween season, mostly related to crowds, traffic, limited parking, and occasional disrespectful behavior from visitors,” he says.“However, much of that frustration seems to come from longtime residents and families who have lived here for generations and have watched tourism grow dramatically, fueled in part by social media.”“For newcomers like myself, the Halloween season is often part of what we expect when choosing to move here, and many of us try to embrace the energy and traditions that make Sleepy Hollow so unique,” he adds. Residents also stress that there is more than just spooky season making this little town of approximately 11,500 people so special.“People tend to think of Sleepy Hollow as a perpetual Halloween destination, or as ‘exurbia,’ even more remote than suburbia.
It’s neither.It’s a very distinctive suburban community,” says Jan Maier, who moved to Sleepy Hollow from Bronxville, NY, seven years ago.
