"First Time in 95 Years": Alesso Takes EDM to the Top of the Empire State Building

Alesso literally reached new heights last night, DJing on the 86th-floor observation deck of the Empire State Building to celebrate his new single, ‘Fight For Love.’ The Swedish dance music superstar billed the rare performance in New York City as “the first time in 95 years,” though Martin Garrix played an audience-free DJ set on the deck in October 2022.Alesso’s performance, however, appears to be the first electronic music show staged for a crowd atop the building.
Alesso dropped his biggest hits under the NYC stars, including ‘Heroes (We Could Be)’ and ‘Calling (Lose My Mind)’ as well as Avicii’s generational dance anthem ‘Without You.’ Meanwhile, fans in nearby apartment buildings got a free show from the comfort of their beds. When the Empire State Building opened in 1931, it became the world’s tallest building, retaining that distinction until the completion of the World Trade Center’s North Tower in 1970.
Today, its 86th-floor observatory offers an open-air, 360° view of New York City. The building has also turned its tower lights into a citywide signaling system.
Its modern LED installation, introduced in 2012, can display more than 16 million colors, allowing the skyscraper to mark cultural events and special occasions across the skyline.A pink display on commemorated Alesso’s performance and new music.
