How idiotic ideology lets e-bikes keep on killing in NYC

E-bikes are slaughtering innocent New Yorkers in fires and collisions — yet foolish ideologies keep the city’s leaders from cracking down.Part of it is the “micromobility cult,” an obsession with boosting every possible alternative to automotive traffic; part is the insane avoidance of anything that risks hindering illegal immigrants. On Wednesday, a fire in Bronx public housing killed an 11-year-old and injured others because an e-bike blocked the apartment’s only exit.More deadly fires are started by e-bike batteries, killing at least 31 New Yorkers since 2023.Yet the city fails to crack down with new laws or tougher enforcement; similarly, NYCHA rules permit e-bikes and lithium-battery charging in apartments with few caveats.Mayor Zohran Mamdani gave away the problem with his comments on the Bronx tragedy, first calling it a “horrific reminder of the danger that lithium-ion battery fires can pose” but then simply pleading with New Yorkers to “store any micromobility devices outside rather than inside their homes.”Nobody calls them “micromobility devices” unless they’re paying fealty to the cult.Consider the cost simply at New York City Housing Authority buildings: E-bike-battery fires in NYCHA developments jumped from 13 in 2024 to 22 already this year.
E-bike collisions have killed at least 133 New Yorkers since 2019, yet Mamdani in March ordered the NYPD to quit handing dangerous e-bike drivers criminal summonses for low-level traffic offenses.Subscribe to our daily Post Opinion newsletter! Please provide a valid email.

And the City Council keeps dithering on the issue, even after it rushed to ban horse carriages over a single death. The politicians know many illegal migrants earn a living as deliveristas, and summonses could put them on ICE radar — so enforcement is out the window.Treat e-bike...
