How Daily Bread is Chasing New Creative Horizons on 'Vanishing Point'

Somewhere along the Blue Ridge Parkway last spring, a car full of friends drove into the mountains before sunrise. They wound through quiet roads in the early morning darkness, chasing the first light of day.

Eventually, they found themselves high above the surrounding landscape, watching the sun rise over the mountains with nowhere else to be, and nothing else to do, but take it all in.It was the kind of experience that makes you want to keep driving, to see what lies beyond the next bend.

Yet no matter how far you travel, the horizon always seems to remain just out of reach. For Daily Bread, that feeling became the foundation for Vanishing Point, the 13-track album he released last month.

What began as a handful of tracks inspired by these road trips gradually developed into a larger record, capturing the feeling of moving toward something just beyond your grasp.“The concept was born out of the inspiration that I got on those trips,” Daily Bread, whose real name is Rhett Whatley, explained to us backstage at Suwannee Hulaween.

“Vanishing Point is that place on the horizon that you’re headed to, and you feel like you never quite get there, which is how it felt on some of those trips.” For the Atlanta-born artist, escaping into eastern Tennessee or western North Carolina became a way to clear his head and find inspiration.Last spring, those excursions began finding their way into his music.

The result is a project shaped by the places he visited, but also by an artist continuing to explore where his music will go next.“It’s got a lot of different sonic themes that I haven’t always dabbled in,” Whatley said.
